Our Mission
The American Cancer Society On Campus at UCI is one branch of a nationwide coalition of college students, faculty, and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer. Working as one of many chapters of the American Cancer Society, we focus our efforts on four areas: Advocacy, Cancer Education, Relay for Life, and Survivorship.
Survivorship
Every year, we host the Luminaria ceremony to honor cancer survivors, cancer warriors, and those who have been impacted with cancer while raising funds to support the American Cancer Society. The Luminaria event is a ceremony of hope and remembrance where we will light luminaria bags or candles.
Cancer Education
We aim to educate students with cancer-related knowledge, such as cancer prevention and early cancer detection. Different valuable sessions are offered for the purpose of educating club members on different aspects of cancer through oncology Q/A sessions, Weekly Meeting education, and the Cancer Awareness Month Project.
Relay for Life at UCI
Relay for Life is one of our largest events we host annually at UCI in Aldrich Park through the American Cancer Society. This cancer walk raises money toward cancer research and patient care. Friends and family can participate as individuals or in groups to walk at the event, celebrating cancer survivorship and solidarity for cancer patients and their loved ones. From 2014-2019, CAC has hosted Relay for Life at Aldrich Park and in the upcoming year we hope to bring this event back to our campus in Spring of 2023.
Advocacy
Advocacy is a national movement of lobbying to increase cancer awareness and change policies regarding cancer prevention and research. Students lobby for change, not only taking action for a better university campus, but also a better state and a better nation. Throughout a year, we participate in various events with the purposr of raising cancer awareness, pushing up funding for cancer research and cancer care, and support the cancer community
