Hello all!
I will be your guide for UWP 7: Practices in College Reading and Writing for Fall 2024. Let me begin by telling you a bit about this course:
Communication through writing happens in all aspects of our lives – whether it’s a text message, an email, or a college essays – we do it all the time. Reading and writing are excellent tools for exploring your world, learning new concepts, and participating effectively in your college careers, future professional lives, and society at large. Each communication situation we encounter is going to be different, and we need strategies to successfully navigate each one. In this course, we will learn and practice such strategies, including understanding long and complex reading assignments, using source materials effectively in your writing, and learning how to implement feedback and revision plans. Our learning will take place in a small, collaborative setting, and our aim is for each of you to feel confident tackling any academic literacy task you encounter at UC Davis and beyond. Now let’s get to work!
We will meet twice a week, face-to-face.
We will spend our face-to-face time learning and applying reading and writing strategies through short lectures, individual tasks, and small group discussions and activities.
Outside of class, you will work on reading assignments, writing tasks aimed at helping you develop as a writer, and major writing projects.

Here's just a bit about me: I got my PhD at UC Davis and I have been teaching writing and English since 2009. I live in Auburn with my family (husband, Kyle and daughter, Josie). I love the outdoors, and lately I've been into mountain biking, SUPing, and skate skiing. I also love to travel as you can see from the pictures below. My hobbies include reading, ceramics, crocheting, crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles.
My husband Kyle and I on our honeymoon in Morocco.
My 6yo daughter, Josie, in NYC.
Paddling on the North Fork of the American River in Auburn.
A recent family vacation to Kauai, Hawai'i (me, Kyle, Mom, and bil).
I teach because I love connecting with you all and being a supportive part of your educational journeys. I teach English because I believe English classes help you build skills that you need to be successful in all parts of your life, including other classes on campus, in work, and even in your personal lives. I strive to be very organized in my work, and I hope you find the class easy to navigate and the work very applicable to your academic lives. As you proceed through the course, you should always know what you need to do and why you’re doing it. If you don’t feel that way, let’s talk! I am committed to providing a class that is purposeful and useful, and one that helps you flourish and feel confident communicating with the world.
Together, I hope we can create a class environment where everyone feels connected to the work and to each other, where everyone feels welcome, safe, respected, and supported. We're all learners together in this class, and we'll all make mistakes, myself included. So let's support each other! Best of all, we all have unique identities and voices that we bring to the classroom, and I’m excited to get to know you and show each of you how your uniqueness is an asset to your learning process in this class and beyond. If at any time you encounter barriers in my class (or any others), I commit to helping you navigate those obstacles so that you can feel empowered in your education. Let’s get to work!
