Adaptive learning tools enable students remain in their "locked-in zone," which is neither excessively boring or dissatisfying. Stronger rate of retention, more participation, and more control over learning usually follow from this process.
Adaptive learning doesn’t replace teachers. It doesn’t understand emotions or give personal encouragement. It works best when paired with human feedback and social learning.
When used properly, adaptive learning is quite effective; it can personalize materials, assist students who lag behind, and challenge fast moving students. It is most useful as a tool, though, not as a teacher. Real people leading the process is an effective way to learn still.
