Ministries

Grace United Church of Christ (GLO) has been serving its community and the world since 1886. Our mission is to follow Jesus, loving God and neighbor, heeding the words of the prophet Micah “to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.” In the spirit of these words, we minister locally as a spiritual community center seven days a week, and worldwide through our acts of justice.

BARBERTON AREA COMMUNITY MINISTRIES (BACM)

Making ends meet can be challenging. BACM serves the most vulnerable people in Barberton, Norton, Clinton, New Franklin, and Doylestown by making sure their most basic needs are being met. GLO partners with this organization by donating food for their food pantry each month. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BACM

FAMILY PROMISE OF SUMMIT COUNTY

Since 2004 Family Promise of Summit County has helped families experiencing homelessness stay together and achieve sustainable independence. They provide trauma-informed case management, financial literacy education, and mentoring services to address poverty and homelessness. For 17 years GLO has shown hospitality to families enrolled in the program by providing compassion and a safe place to stay for a week. (This occurs on a rotating basis with other area churches.) At the end of each work day our volunteers greet our guests and show them to their rooms. Children are free to play outdoors until dinner when volunteers and families sit down together for a hot meal. After dinner until bedtime there are crafts for the children and relaxation time for parents. After breakfast the next morning, the FP van drops the children off at school; parents go to work or meet with their case manager at the Family Day Center.

Note: In the midst of the pandemic, Family Promise of Summit County is moving into their new headquarters, Glendora House, at the Job Center. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT FAMILY PROMISE OF SUMMIT COUNTY

IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY

Scripture tells us to “feed the widow and the orphan.” Understanding this, we coordinate with members to provide meals and transportation as needed to people in the immigrant community who are struggling. We assisted a family about to be deported by helping them load their household belongings into a cargo container for shipping to Columbia.

LATCHKEY KIDS

GLO opens its doors to Latchkey Kids, a child care service in Norton, OH, by providing safe indoor and outdoor space for their programming. Attendance averages 25 children during the school year and 50 in the summer. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, we increased the building’s power and updated its computer capacity. This enables children who are required to attend school remotely, to keep up with their school work.

RECOVERY AND SUPPORT GROUPS

People struggling with, or recovering from addiction to alcohol or narcotics, and people who have loved ones with histories of addiction find support and healing space at GLO. Throughout the week we host four AA groups, one Al-Anon group, and one NA group.

WITNESS

We are a witness to God's love through advocacy for peace and justice for all. "When we are needed, we show up!"
