Task 1: Process Journal Exercises
Description: In these exercises, we would blindly draw outside and negative shapes and try to replicate their proportions with the help of checking lines
Description: In these drawings, we made a pose with our hands and blindly drew them without looking at our drawings.
Description: In class, Mr. Holt set up some still life models and by drawing the overall contour of the drawings and using checking lines, I was able to replicate the still lie with relative accuracy
Description: After a couple days, I was able to get better at using proportion checking and showed the process rather than just erasing my mistakes.
Description: In these perspective drawings, I learned one point (where everything comes from a vanishing point) and two point (where everything comes from two vanishing points) perspective.
Description: In this perspective drawing, I learned three point perspective, where everything looks tall as seen in the drawing on the left.
Description: In this perspective, I used one, two, and three point perspective to make a giant mall with many stores, an aquarium and checkerboard floors.
Description: Now with perspective under my belt, I then took that into account with my next column box drawing, where instead of erasing your mistakes, you use checking lines to make sure everything has the right proportions.
Description: In these contour drawings, I did the same thing in the Column Box Exercise while also incorporating a little bit of shading.
Description: This class, we learned about hatching and smudging, two ways of shading used in the Sphere exercise where we also learned about the highlight, half tone, reflected light, and the shadow core.
Task 2: Process Journal Compositional diagram and tonal thumbnail sketches
Still Life: Still Life with Oysters, a Silver Tazza, and Glassware
Artist: Willem Claesz Heda
Source: https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/nstl/hd_nstl.htm
Description: In this still life, I illustrated the geometric arrangement of the main elements and spatial movement of our attention throughout the space
Description: In this drawing, I roughly replicated the main elements of the still life above.
Task 3: Process Journal--at-home set up and diagrams
In my still life at home, I chose many unique objects such as the fruitbowl, as used in many still life compositions with many unique fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, and a pomegranate representing antiquity. Additionally, I used other shapes such as the rubber chicken, symbolizing quirkiness and the water jugs signifying life with their interesting forms. Finally, The Odyssey book in the background represents the antique while the Google Home represents modernity. These shapes contribute to the overall meaning of this still life encompassing all as it embodies the new, old and quirkiness in general for a rich, fufilling active life.
Task 4: Process Journal--Two tonal thumbnail sketches/maps done in class
Description: In these drawings, I replicated some elements of the still life set up in the classroom by Mr. Holt
Task 5: Final Project---Drawing in class
Description: In my Unit 1 Final, I completely replicated the still life set up class incorporating all skills learned in thsi unit, such as shading, perspective, and contour drawing.
Task 6: Evaluation (300 words max.)
Evaluation:
During this unit, I learned many things from the beginnning of September to now. First, I learned about contour drawing and how it can help us replicate the proportions of another drawing with near-perfect accuracy along with the help of checking lines. For example, in the first couple of drawings, you can see the use of checking and adjusting in the September 20th drawing where my initial contour didn't capture the still life's proportions. Next, we learned about one and two point perspective and how to draw things away from the vanishing point ultimately captured in my final perspective drawing. Additionally, I learned about smudging and cross-hatching to emphasize where the light is hitting or not hitting the most. All these things led up to my Unit 1 Final where I employed the contour drawing initially to outline where everything is going to go, then recognizing the important of perspective in determining where the objects are facing, and eventually filling in the details with mostly smudging so the drawing looked more smooth so you can't see a lot of lines. One key takeaway from this unit was learning how to set up a still life at home. I carefully chose objects like a rubber chicken and a bowl of fruit, selecting shapes that added visual interest and contributed to the overall meaning of the composition, as I reflected upon in my Still Life Reflection. Overall, I feel that I made great progress in my ability to observe and represent objects accurately, and I am proud of the improvements I’ve made throughout this unit.
