Boarding May 1, 2025
Last Friday evening, the UCC Boarding community came together for a memorable Shabbat dinner, bringing students and staff around the table in a spirit of unity, reflection, and celebration. Hosted by the Jewish Culture Club, the event welcomed a mix of students from various backgrounds, all eager to learn about and share in this meaningful tradition. It was our first boarding event with 50% day school participation!
The evening began with the lighting of the Shabbat candles and traditional blessings over the challah and wine, led by Mr. Rapps and Mr. Shore, while day school students graciously shared insights into the significance of each ritual. A delicious meal followed, featuring traditional favourites like matzah ball soup, roast chicken, and kugel, all prepared with care and enthusiasm.
Laughter and thoughtful conversation filled the room as students connected over shared stories, cultural experiences, and new friendships. For many, it was their first time participating in a Shabbat dinner, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere left a lasting impression.
Events like this one help foster understanding and inclusivity within the UCC community, reminding us of the power of gathering, storytelling, and honouring traditions. We look forward to many more moments of togetherness in the terms ahead.
The Year 12 Grad Golf Day was a swinging success, offering students a fun and relaxing way to celebrate the final stretch of their UCC journey. Joined by Mr. Turner and Mr. Jon Heffernan, the group enjoyed a day on the course filled with laughter, light-hearted competition and some impressive (and not-so-impressive) shots. Whether seasoned golfers or first-timers, everyone had a great time bonding outside the classroom. The event was a perfect mix of camaraderie, fresh air, and friendly competition—an unforgettable send-off for the graduating class.
A fantastic game of offense, defense, momentum and perseverance from all students involved. Golden Stick is a historic tradition within our boarding community, a competitive hockey game between Seatons and Wedds to conclude the year. This game highlights some of the best and brightest hockey talent within our boarding houses. Students with limited hockey experience are also given the opportunity to get out on the ice and show off what they have been working on throughout the year.
The game was an instant classic, with Seatons jumping out to a significant lead in the first period and Wedds having to recuperate and retaliate in the 2nd and 3rd period. Wedds rose to this challenge and went on an impressive run of their own. In the concluding minutes of the third period Wedds had to sacrifice it all to give themselves a chance at winning the game. While this sacrifice created some tangible pressure, Seatons maintained their discipline and were able to close out the Win!
The night ended with some amazing pizza and wings making all the students winners!! Congratulations to all the students who got involved and we look forward to Golden Stick 2026.
