The virus has made a recent comeback due to the reduced vaccination rates of certain populations. Measles vaccination has been routinely offered in Canada since the 1980s for children aged one and four (as part of the MMR vaccine). Public Health recommends we now all consider getting a single MMR booster, especially if we have had only one shot or have planned travel outside the country.
Where to get vaccinated
Measles vaccines are free for all Ontarians.
Children: School-aged children can catch up on their routine vaccinations, including measles, by visiting their primary health care provider, some walk-in clinics or a Toronto Public Health community clinic. Appointments can be booked at TPHbookings.ca.
Adults: Adults can get vaccinated by visiting their primary health care provider and some walk-in clinics. Unsure of your measles history? If you are born before 1970 and are unsure if you had measles as a child, or you plan to travel, get one dose of the measles vaccine (MMR) for the best protection.
