Curriculum Night
Dear UCC Families,
Welcome to this special summer edition of Heads Up. We hope it’s helpful as you begin to think about September and setting your child up for success this fall. In this issue, you’ll find important information about orientation and back-to-school schedules, along with key dates as well as uniform and textbook information for the 2024–25 school year.
Our updated Family Handbook is here — please consider this your resource on school routines, academic and co-curricular programs, student expectations and school policies. Also please note the handbook includes our new Community Code of Conduct, which is designed to foster a positive College climate in which all community members feel safe, supported, included and accepted.
I want to extend a warm welcome back to Sarah Fleming who returns as our Head of the Prep School. Sarah’s early return from parental leave will progress from part time to full time through the fall. Julia Kinnear expands her leadership responsibilities as our Vice-Principal, Learning and Academic Innovation. In this new role, Julia oversees our academic program along with our commitments to wellbeing programs and student supports including our Wernham West Centre for Learning and Health Centre teams. Joining Julia’s team are Jill Strimas as our Director of Academics and Elizabeth Kennedy as the Director of the Wernham West Centre for Learning and Student Services. Additionally, Mary Modeste joined the College over the summer as our new Vice-Principal of People and Culture and has been busy welcoming our new and returning faculty and staff and ensuring they’re supported for the year ahead.
There’s much to look forward to, so we hope that while you’re enjoying your summer you’re anticipating all that UCC will offer your child this fall. Heads Up will now resume every Thursday afternoon so please watch your email.
Warm regards,
Sam McKinney
Principal
Families can now access the Family Handbook 2024–25. Note that the Handbook is also shared on Bluenet > Policies and Guides (login required).
The College's calendar of school holidays, school conferences, early dismissals and other key dates is available here: Major Dates 2024–25 Calendar.
This year’s Forest Hill/Upper Canada College Terry Fox community run will take place on Sunday, September 15. There's a lot of fun planned for a great morning with friends and family while raising money for cancer research.
Participants are welcome to walk or run the 5 and 10 km routes. Participants can look forward to:
Fun and dynamic pre-run warmup lead by the Midnight Runners, a group of enthusiastic athletes who will run the route with family-friendly music
Live music (a trumpeter will send off the runners and an acoustic band will play after the race is completed)
Fresh coffee and bagels before the race, and pizza and snacks at the end
A fire truck (subject to availability) for families to sit in and take pictures
A designated games area on UCC’s Prep field
For more details please visit the website.
The organizers welcome UCC families and Upper School students to volunteer for pre-race setup on Sept. 14, race morning support or post-race afternoon cleanup. If interested, please email ryanjsaunders99@gmail.com.
