The boarders enjoyed a sold-out showing of Legally Blonde: The Musical at BSS last Friday night. With outstanding performances by both Jerry Jia and Byron Dube from boarding, the boarders were surprised by how much they enjoyed the musical. Seeing their peers shine and acting so charismatic in their roles really allowed them to fully engage and stay captivated, especially in the second half. I saw smiling faces, clapping hands, and looks of shock on some faces after some of the outstanding individual singing performances. All of the boarders were happy they went to watch the show and support their friends!
Last week, the boarders celebrated Lunar New Year with a feast, friendship, and festivities in the first all-campus community dinner of 2024. The diverse menu was inspired by the cultural traditions of China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Vietnam, ensuring that everyone was able to entice as much wealth as they could eat dumplings (and they ate a lot of dumplings!). The evening began with a brief introduction to some key traditions surrounding the festival from boarding staff Mr. Parry-Lai and Ms. Miu, as well as parent Alvin Jia. Indeed, some Cantonese well-wishes were learned by a few of the boarders in exchange for some lucky red packets! After dinner, Michael Xu and Billy Chun each shared stories about how they celebrated Lunar New Year back home in Jiangxi province, China, and Incheon, South Korea respectively. The stories of home, along with the mountains of food were perfectly complemented by Lucas Chen and Mr Sontag's string duet to finish off the night, leaving all with memories of a very special community dinner. From all of us here at UCC Boarding, we wish you a happy and prosperous Year of the Dragon!
On Sunday, Wedd's House celebrated Super Bowl Sunday by holding a cooking class for a small group of boarders where we prepared food for our Super Bowl party. After going through the basics of food hygiene, we taught the boys how to brown meat, make dry spice seasoning and the rudiments of making cajun chicken and chilli beef loaded nachos. We then settled down for an evening of football, chilli, nachos, veggies and dip and pizza.
