Choose the major that you find most enjoyable because all majors can lead to medical school. Though you can apply to medical school with any degree (as long as you meet the prerequisites), most students tend to major in either biochemistry, biology, or chemistry. These majors are the path of least resistance to complete all prerequisites while also preparing you for the MCAT.
The Student Learning Outcomes for UCA’s Biology pre-med curriculum will allow you to plan and understand the academic path needed to be a successful applicant to medical school. In general, it answers the common student question of “WHY” these classes are needed.
UCA’s Pre-Medical program provides students with a Biology Degree that prepares them for acceptance in a large number of medical schools. The degree requires 20-28 hours of elective credits providing students the opportunity for a wide knowledge base in the medical field, or a sharply focused concentration in a specific area of interest.
On average, 75% of ACS-certified chemistry and biochemistry majors from UCA who apply to UAMS are accepted into their medical program. Our unique requirement of undergraduate research helps students develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. The ACS-certified degree paths not only help undergraduates prepare for their MCAT, they prepare them for the rigors of medical school as well.
