A Self-Care Guide for Active Community Members
Self-care describes a conscious act one takes in order to promote
their own physical, mental, and emotional health.
Read the archetype descriptions below. Choose the one you most identify with, then click on the picture for self-care options for every aspect of your life; physical, social, mental, spiritual, and emotional. Based on the recommendations, develop your own self-care plan.
Minnie Ransom is a conjure woman and healer but also a symbol of African American womanhood. She is spiritual and strong, committed to her personal well-being and the well-being of her community—both of which she knows to be inseparable from her spiritual roots.
Choose this archetype if you bear great responsibility as a healer/fixer in your home and/or community.
Velma Henry is the protagonist in the story, and in many ways, she represents the strong African American woman who carves her rightful place in the world by pursuing her ambitions and fighting for civil rights. However, amid the turmoil of the civil rights movement, she suffers a fragmentation of her soul and spirit, and her inability to cope leads her back to her roots where she can once again, feel whole.
Choose this archetype if you feel that the weight of the world is on your shoulders, you're burning the candle at both ends, and you don't even know how to make time for yourself.
Fred Holt, a bus driver, represents the sort of man Velma must understand and even love if she is to love and help her people.
Choose this archetype if you feel invisible and/or struggle with who you are in this time of great change.
Obie is the man behind the powerful woman, Velma. He was struggling with his own demons and as a result there were a lifetime of secrets between them.
Choose this archetype if you find yourself supporting someone/something but you don't have the support that you need.
