SUMMARY:
Katalina is a girl from a tiny island in the Pacific called Samoa. Growing up in a polluted environment filled with dust and rubbish, she makes up her mind that this is not the future she wants to see for herself, her family and her friends. Therefore, she creates a Green Team at St Mary’s School so as to stop climate change and to build a better quality of life for everyone. A journey which takes her from her tiny island all the way to New York to show that no matter how small you are, you can "make a dent" in the world.
MAIN IDEA:
No matter how small you are, you can make a dent in the world if you believe in yourself. It is mandatory to become aware of the need to protect the environment and the Earth due to it is the only place we have to live.
EXPLANATION:
Prepared for inclusive education, the reading book was chosen to tell students about climate change and air and water pollution. Considering that this change will affect the whole world in the near future, it becomes a necessity that students and teachers should be prepared for the process.
Katalina, the protagonist of the book, creates a Green Team and tries to change the behaviour of the people who live in Samoa.
Can the proposals be extrapolated to the rest of the world? What can we do to improve the air and water quality in our community?

Pre-reading activities
Thinking skills task: See – Think – Wonder.
Students see a photo of a pollution area and they have to describe what they are seeing. They should express their feeling about it and they ask question about things they don’t know.
▪ What do you see?
▪ What do you think it is going on?
▪ What does it make you wonder?
Rotating sheet technique:
Students, divided into groups (4 students per group), will answer the following question:
What would you do to reduce the air and water pollution in your neighbourhood?
(...)
Finally they will put in common all ideas on the board and the results will be shared with other members of the eTwinning project by using FORUM – PAGE DISCUSSION – THREADS
Reading the story
Teachers introduce the book to the students. Students will spend time (2 or 3 hours in a week) in a park nearby or in the school eco-garden, reading the story.
Then the groups will choose a chapter and will prepare a Kahoot (in the ICT classroom) for his classmates.
During one meeting with the other partners (students and teachers), one or two Kahoots will be played on line.
Post-reading activities
1. Students must draw two pictures: One about a polluted environment and the second one about a clean and safety environment. (Art class)
The products will be published on the school Facebook page and on the school website.
They will decorate the classrooms, the library and corridors.
2. Pros and cons: They must write three or four statement (podcasts) about the advantages and disadvantages of each point. (Spanish and English classes)
The podcasts will be broadcasted on our school radio “OndAlegre”
Animation Activities
Dramatization:
Students will play a representation (for preschool pupils and 1st – 4th Grades) with alternative ending or alternative solution which will be done and proposed by them.
Evaluation of the process
Rubrics for evaluation: The activities carried out will be evaluated in each of the subjects involved (Science, English, Spanish language, Technology and Art)
Involving students in assessments: Forms for students. Fulfilment of expectations and self-evaluation of the process.
Final form for teachers: Evaluation of the process includes strengths, weaknesses and proposals for improvement for future projects.
Including tangible documents to evaluate such as the storyboard, participation in group discussions and sharing of resources and ideas. We use snapshots of learning throughout the process by having students complete a project diary, a selfassessment and discussions about the process.
DISSEMINATION
The project will be published on:
ESEP's website: Create an EVENT after the end of the project.
On the school's dissemination channels:
School Website (photos or videos of the most relevant activities).
