Class overview
English 3 invites students to engage with American authors, primarily focusing on fiction and non-fiction from the 20th and 21st century. By reading memoirs, letters, novels, and poetry from a range of authors including Wallace Terry, Nathan McCall, Jesmyn Ward, Lorraine Hansberry, and August WIlson, students will undertake essential questions surrounding cultural identity, mental health issues, the American Dream, and encountering prejudice and bigotry in their communities. Juniors focus on composing essays about their own experiences in preparation for college admissions, write personal poetry, and conduct research about mental health and solutions for improving mental healthcare in America. They begin to tackle more rigorous English standards, as they learn to determine relationships between themes, the impact of specific words and phrases, and acquire and implement academic language in order to elucidate their interpretations of literature.
