Our project is titled “Beyond the Gown” and our goal is to bring attention to the patient as a person with their own hopes, desires, personality and interests. We’ve chosen to represent this idea with a collage of photos superimposed on a hospital gown. Each member of our group has contributed photos that reflect our PIE mentors - who they are and what they care about… things that would help their care provider see them as a person. We think that patients are often seen as the sum of their illnesses. When a patient is admitted to hospital they are put in a uniform patient gown which immediately depersonalizes them. But each patient has a story, different priorities, interests, and fears. When healthcare practitioners see a generically gowned patient, we need to recognize the uniqueness of each patient. Not only does this elevate the experience for patients emotionally, but it also results in better, more goal-oriented health outcomes. We must aim beyond patient-centered care and provide person-focused care. We hope that our project brings attention to the importance of healthcare professionals making a conscious effort to get to know our patients as people.
