How individuals dealing with chronic disease and disability feel that strangers perceive them was a common topic that we discussed with our PIE mentors. Our mentors were aware of people viewing/treating them differently, and we have learned about their experiences and the assumptions they believe others are making about them based on interactions and appearances. Our project is a visual representation of the perception that students, age 10-12, and adults, age 23-34, have about chronic disease and disability. We surveyed elementary students (n=56) and adults (n=52) to submit the first word they think of when they hear the words chronic disease or disability and turned their responses into a wordle, where the size of the word is proportional to the number of times it was submitted.
