A unifying theme with our patients was that they weren’t in control of the “hand they were dealt”. In other words, their illnesses and pervasive symptoms were determined predominantly by factors outside of their control. What we wanted to highlight through this project, was the control an individual possesses over how they wish to play their hand – whether or not it’s initially perceived to be a winning one. This aspect may help instill hope and encouragement to continue on in the face of difficulty and loss.
