Hidden Worlds

Using still shots from PIE-related video journals filmed over the course of two years, Perceptions challenges the viewer to consider the dynamic effect of changes across time and space on our perspectives. The precisely half-filled glass of water at the centre of the piece calls to mind the idiomatic expressions of “Glass half full/empty.” This central symbol is also the target of the “gaze” of the photographic stills of Chloe and me, with the staggered arrangement of the still shots mirroring the changes in our perspective as our PIE project went along, gradually beginning to adopt the optimistic mind frame of our mentor. The raised platform of medical textbooks and prescription bottles, calls to mind both the features of chronic disease as well as the educational and pharmacological tools that can help overcome them. Finally, the gradual evaporation of the water in the piece itself reflects the uphill struggle of chronic disease management.
