Definition of "pioneer" created during an arts-based workshop at the Wadey Centre.
Directions:
Begin with introductions
Facilitator should divide participants into groups of 3-4.
Option A (if you have done the collage and sensory poetry activities):
Have participants review their group’s poster paper with the images and post-it notes
Using that material as a prompt, ask each group to create a definition of the word “pioneer”
Option Two (if you have not done the collage or sensory poetry activities):
Have a general discussion with the whole group to generate some common understandings of pioneer. Questions you could ask: When you hear the word “pioneer” what comes to mind? What images do you see? What words are associated with pioneer? What histories?
Ask each group to create a definition of the word “pioneer”
Note: each group may construct their definition in whatever form they choose.
Have groups share their definition of pioneer.
Concluding Questions:
How do our definitions of pioneer fit with the narratives at the museum?
