Purpose: What does ”pioneer” mean to you? What images do you associate with ”pioneer”?
Materials Needed:
●magazines
●scissors
● glue
● flip-chart paper
● tables
● chairs
Set-up: Each table should have 1 piece of flip-chart paper, 3 glue sticks, 3 scissors, and 3-4 magazines at each station.

Directions:
Begin with introductions
Divide your participants into groups of 3-4 and have one group/station
Instruct participants to go through the magazines and cut out any image that they think represents “pioneer” and paste these images on the flipchart paper.
After the collage is created, spend time having each group explain the images they chose and why they think those images represent pioneer.
The discussion is an opportunity to begin to consider how external narratives (like media) have shaped understandings of pioneer and how some of the images might compliment or counter the pioneer narrative at the museum
Save collages if you are moving on to another workshop activity
Concluding Questions:
What are some of the narratives that have shaped our understandings of what pioneer means?
How are those represented in our museums?
