Illness and death are both parts of the human experience. While these can be painful and difficult to navigate, individuals can grow as a result of their adversity. Animals also find ways of becoming strong through adversity. The antlers on the deer shown on this exhibit were used by the animal for protection, feeding, and sexual selection. The size and number of tines on an antler increase each year, similar to how a number of elements help patients navigate their illness. The skull used in this exhibit is a visceral reminder of our mortality, while the objects placed around the skull represent different aspects of one' illness experience.
