Arthur has returned from France.

Here are some pictures from Rennes:

Near the university residence for visiting professors, where I stayed briefly, is the beautiful Parc du Thabor, a formal French garden.

On my way to the Saturday morning market, I stroll down rue Ste. Melaine.

Next I head down to Place Ste. Anne, home to countless itinerants.

Most Saturdays, there is some sort of a protest march in centre-ville, such as the Place de la Mairie.

Goodbye to Andriy, who returned to L'viv in December 2004. Welcome to Andrew Grosvenor, who arrived in January 2005, and Oksana Zelinska, who arrived in February 2005.

Here are some pictures that Andriy took from our trip to the Alberta/BC Inorganic Chemistry Colloquium, April 29 to May 1, 2004:

A lunch stop at Pyramid Lake in Jasper National Park.

A nice day atop the UNBC campus in Prince George, BC.

I think this is at the summit when we took the Jasper tramway during a blustery day on the way back to Edmonton.

Then here are pictures from the CSC conference in London, Ontario, May 27 to June 2, 2004:

We (Olivier, Nathalie, Frederic, Andriy, myself) are all soaking wet in Niagara Falls.

I think this is a bit upstream at the rapids, again in Niagara Falls.

I highly recommend Genny's Bed & Breakfast in London, Ontario.

Andriy, Frederic, and I took a short hike through Elk Island National Park on a soggy weekend:

"Look, Arthur," Frederic wonders, "I think Andriy is getting intimate with the moose."

An end-of-summer trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park and to Drumheller in southeastern Alberta in 2004:

Time for a rest!

"Look, Arthur," Frederic wonders, "I think Andriy is getting intimate with the dinosaur."

"Nah, the Tyrannosaurus Rex is pretty harmless."

Monday, November 22, 2004

My computer hard drive died over the summer so it has been slow going getting things re-organized again.

I attended the Intermetallics Workshop in Stockholm in September.

Anita Gerards was an intern student from the University of Dresden who visited in September.

Our new INEL powder diffractometer has now been installed and is operational.

...And now some scenes from Rod and Arthur's excellent adventures in Calgary:
We mingled with the rich and famous (including our very own Wolfgang Jaeger).
While Marty Cowie is being distracted, I convince Rod Wasylishen to swipe Bob Crawford's award. (In the meantime, Wolfgang Jaeger has found an unclaimed digital camera).
Margaret-Ann Armour and Mickey Takats are absolutely taken by my charm and wit, but Joe Takats knows that Arthur is not to be trusted!

Sunday, August 26, 2001

Congratulations to Meitian Wang, who defended his Ph.D. thesis on August 17, 2001. External examiner Gordie Miller had a good time hiking around Jasper (photos to come). Meitian is off to work as a postdoctoral fellow doing protein crystallography with Mike James in the Biochemistry Department at U of A. The group went out for a Chinese banquet on August 24, 2001 where half of us had a good time and the other half did not know what to make of the oysters and crab. Good luck, Meitian, and remember we still have a review article to write up!

Best wishes to Chris Sheets, who is off to graduate studies at Northwestern University. He is frantically studying for his clearance exams now. Chris also won a poster prize at the 2001 Alberta/British Columbia Inorganic Chemistry Colloquium in Prince George, August 9-11, 2001.

Farewell to Yanna Stivar, a high-school student who worked for a few weeks in our group as part of the WISEST program.

Say hello to Shane Crerar, who started on August 13, 2001.

Sunday, June 10, 2001

Photos from Allison's going away party in March 2001:

We had a buffet dinner at Maurya Palace, an Indian restaurant in Millwoods.

Meitian said, "Mark, look -- Devon's about to throw up!"

Allison and Arthur are not amused.

We had a great time at the 84th CSC Conference in Montreal, May 26-30, 2001. History was made by having the first-ever "Solid State Chemistry" symposium (in name) held at a CSC conference.

Thomas Albrecht-Schmitt and Arthur atop the mountain, where we saw Holger "Ironman" Kleinke running around like a madman!
Devon cried, "Somebody, anybody, please come look at my poster!"
Jacques Barbier and Robert Hammond whisper sweet nothings to each other. Can you see Laura "Grandma" Hoistad rolling her eyes?
Chris Sheets bemoaning how tired and hungry he is.
Thomas Albrecht-Schmitt wondering how he will exact revenge on Arthur later. Can you see Laura "Grandma" Hoistad scheming again?
Laura Deakin shrugs, "I dunno why they're superconducting, they just are!"
Meitian's nervously laughing as he prepares for his talk the next day.
Claudia Felser expounds, "You see, electrons are like muffins...."
Holger Kleinke responds, "Hmm, I must have eaten a bad one then."
Rob Lam tells Dr. Cooke all about frustration, geometric and otherwise.
There was also a photo of John Greedan and Stephen Lee, but it was so awful, I will spare them the publicity.

Friday, May 11, 2001

Okay, a little bit of catchup here to do:

Allison Mills successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis on March 16, 2001. External examiner Ken Poeppelmeier really came here to do some serious skiing at Jasper and a good time was had by all. Allison has now gone off to the Laboratory of Crystal and Structural Chemistry, Bijvoet Center, Utrecht University. You can write to Allison at a.m.mills@chem.uu.nl to tell her not to bring back foot-and-mouth or mad-cow disease!

Congratulations to Meitian Wang for winning an Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize.  It is given to about 25 graduate students per year at the University of Alberta to recognize outstanding research accomplishments.  You may recall that Allison Mills also won this prize last year.

Congratulations to Chris Sheets for winning the prize for the best inorganic presentation at the Western Undergraduate Chemistry Conference at Simon Fraser University. Chris did a great job explaining how wonderful solid state chemistry is.

Undergraduate Chad Lewis has joined the group this summer and will put his arc-welding trade skills to good use in the laboratory. Mark Morgan and Chris Sheets are also working in the group this summer and continuing on with their projects.

Sunday, February 25, 2001

First, the group went to Julio's Barrio where Rob bought Arthur a few shots of tequila while they wondered whether anyone would show up. (They did, eventually.)

Devon, Arthur, and Allison just having a good time.

Rob continued carousing with Meitian.

... and cozied up to Allison.

... and Laura.
