My computer hard drive died over the summer so it has been slow going getting things re-organized again.
I attended the Intermetallics Workshop in Stockholm in September.

Our new INEL powder diffractometer has now been installed and is operational.

A lot has happened this year.
Two undergraduate students, Karen Ridgway and André Workman, spent their summer working in the laboratory.
Arthur received the Faculty of Science Award for Excellent Teaching and the Faculty of Science Research Award at the University of Alberta.
In May 2003, Arthur visited the Université de Rennes 1 as a "professeur invité" hosted by Olivier Tougait.
Arthur attended several conferences this year, including the ACA conference in Cincinnati (July 2003), the CSC meeting in Ottawa (August 2003), and the ACS meeting in New York (September 2003).
Arthur is also now entering his second year as coordinator for General Chemistry, which has seen record enrolments this year at nearly 2700 students.
Chad gave me a lemon plant before his departure to Boston College this summer. The plant died, but rose again.
Robert Smith from University of Nebraska at Omaha visited our laboratory for a week in August to collect X-ray data while contending with a poison ivy rash.

Congratulations to Meitian Wang, who defended his Ph.D. thesis on August 17, 2001. External examiner Gordie Miller had a good time hiking around Jasper (photos to come). Meitian is off to work as a postdoctoral fellow doing protein crystallography with Mike James in the Biochemistry Department at U of A. The group went out for a Chinese banquet on August 24, 2001 where half of us had a good time and the other half did not know what to make of the oysters and crab. Good luck, Meitian, and remember we still have a review article to write up!

Okay, a little bit of catchup here to do:
Allison Mills successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis on March 16, 2001. External examiner Ken Poeppelmeier really came here to do some serious skiing at Jasper and a good time was had by all. Allison has now gone off to the Laboratory of Crystal and Structural Chemistry, Bijvoet Center, Utrecht University. You can write to Allison at a.m.mills@chem.uu.nl to tell her not to bring back foot-and-mouth or mad-cow disease!
Congratulations to Meitian Wang for winning an Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize. It is given to about 25 graduate students per year at the University of Alberta to recognize outstanding research accomplishments. You may recall that Allison Mills also won this prize last year.
Congratulations to Chris Sheets for winning the prize for the best inorganic presentation at the Western Undergraduate Chemistry Conference at Simon Fraser University. Chris did a great job explaining how wonderful solid state chemistry is.
Undergraduate Chad Lewis has joined the group this summer and will put his arc-welding trade skills to good use in the laboratory. Mark Morgan and Chris Sheets are also working in the group this summer and continuing on with their projects.

A banner day:
Meitian passed his Ph.D. candidacy exam today.
Since we all got out early from Meitian's exam, we then headed to the Faculty club to watch Allison graciously receive an Andrew Stewart Memorial Graduate Prize. "This prize is awarded in direct recognition of excellence in research at the doctoral level; it acknowledges outstanding accomplishment and potential in pursuit of new knowledge."
