Current Lab Members

Kiera Greenaway, MSc Student

Kiera joined the lab in May 2022 as a MSc student in Environmental Engineering. She has a Bachelor of Science in Civil-Environmental Engineering, which was also completed at the University of Alberta. She is passionate about environmental protection, and her research focuses on the weathering of microplastics originating from different sources. Outside of school, her hobbies include reading and writing poetry, training for the heptathlon, and walking her newly adopted cockapoo, Buddy.

Fleur Issac, MSc Student (Co-supervised with Dr. Tamzin Blewett, Bio Sci)

Fleur graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences and economics from the University of Alberta in 2022. She is currently an M.Sc. candidate in the Physiology, Cell & Developmental Biology program with the Blewett lab and the Farner lab. Her thesis project involves studying the toxicological and physiological effects of acute and chronic exposure to suspensions of copper nanoparticles, found in pesticides, on freshwater daphnia species, Daphnia magna. She is also passionate about music and spends her time writing songs, painting, reading, knowing a little too much about sitcoms and superheroes, and engaging in physical and creative activities with her friends and family.

Lab Alumni

Elnaz Kalantar, MSc, January 2024

Elnaz is a MSc student in Environmental Engineering. Her background is in Applied Chemistry (pharmaceutical aspects). She got her bachelor's and first master's degrees from her hometown (Iran). Her current research focuses on producing micro- and nanoplastics and understanding their properties, behavior, and ageing in the environment. Besides her research, she spends her leisure time painting, writing, and doing outdoor activities. She loves nature, animals, and traveling.

Dhriti Gupta, M. Eng. Student, August 2023

Harry Song, M.Eng. Student, August 2023

Harry graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (Co-op) from McMaster University. Following his graduation in 2022, Harry decided to pursue graduate studies in environmental engineering at the University of Alberta.

Presently, Harry is conducting research on biofilm degradation at the Farner Lab. Since biofilm is widely utilized in the wastewater sector, researching the degradation results allows researchers to better understand the plastic's features and potential future implications.

Harry is a major fan of the Harry Potter series. In fact, this is why he picked Harry as his English name when he moved to Canada in 2012. Harry has a Siamese cat called Ais. The two stay up late at night and work on complex environmental engineering challenges.

Natasha Bugg, Undergraduate Researcher

Natasha joined the team in May 2021 through a summer internship offered by the I-Steam pathways program. In the lab, she's worked on microplastic production and analysis. Natasha is finishing her third year in undergrad studying biology and psychology but has found a great interest in environmental science with her work on the team. Natasha was a 2021 AWSN Scholarship winner.

Finn Bourgeois, Undergraduate Researcher / Coop, Summer 2022
