This undergraduate research studio is under the supervision and leadership of Dr. Tomislav Terzin, Associate Professor of Biology at the Augustana Campus of University of Alberta. Dr. Terzin has a PhD (doctor of philosophy) in Zoology and is fascinated with colour patterns of living things. He has been studying beetles and butterflies for over 30 years. You can also find this information on the University of Alberta directory.
My teaching philosophy, although still (and forever) evolving, can be at present formulated in seven statements:
1. Successful teachers have a passion for teaching.
2. Teaching has to be alive.
3. The teacher has to be knowledgeable.
4. Good teaching is a two-way process.
5. Good teaching is a multi-channelled and multi-strategic endeavour which takes into account the specific needs of an individual student.
6. Good teaching takes students out of their comfort zone, expanding their capabilities.
7. Good teaching is a lifestyle and a mentorship.

Each semester Dr. Terzin takes on multiple research students through a directed study. These undergraduate students earn credits for their research while also balancing courses for their degree. This research team is one of the largest at Augustana and many students complete research over multiple semesters throughout their degree.Â
Ayra is a fourth year biology major at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. After completing her BSc, she hopes to continue her education by attending graduate school next fall continuing to apply the research skills she has developed from her time in Tom's Undergraduate research Lab.
My name is Chad Nichol and I am a second year Biology major. The Butterfly and Beetles lab has spurred my passion for research and I hope to put it to good use during my plan to become a physician
Cassandra is a 2nd year Science and Education student, with a major in Biology and minor is Visual Arts. She plans to become a high school teacher or go into textbook illustration.
Katie is a third-year student majoring in biology and minoring in environmental science. In her free time, she enjoys running, skiing, and spending time with her animals
