EMERGENCY MEDICINE
SHADOWING/PRE-CLINICAL ELECTIVES
2025-2026
2025-2026
You may be scheduled for a maximum of one shift per semester (Sept-Dec & Jan-Apr) but this is not guaranteed. There are currently limited shifts available but all attempts will be made to schedule everyone for a shift.
Please click the link below or email emugme@ualberta.ca to request the list of the shifts that are available for shadowing. There may be a waitlist but you will be added to it and will receive the list when ready. The learner schedules are finalized in four-week blocks.
Please DO NOT forward or share the sign-up form with other students. All efforts are being made to ensure the process is kept fair. If you know of another interested student, please refer them to this website.
As soon as you can, please respond with your ONE preferred shift. Once the shift is confirmed, you will be sent an email with further information including the preceptor's name.
You can also reply if there isn't a shift that works for you and you will be sent that next block's list when those learner schedules are finalized.
If you will not be able to make it for your shift send an email ASAP to emugme@ualberta.ca.
Preceptors will be notified the week prior to the shift and will be expecting a shadow student.
Directions for how to register your preclinical elective in assess.med can be found here. All elective shadowing must be recorded in Assess.Med before the shadowing occurs, by completing the appropriate form ELV MED 517 for Year 1 or ELV MED 518 for Year 2.
You will need to have a face mask, stethoscope, AHS ID, and a pen and paper in case you want to jot down some notes.
Bring a snack. The shifts can go on for a while (and often through mealtimes) and you might not get a chance for a formal break. Having some food handy in the physicians' room to snack on when you get the opportunity will be useful.
You will need to pick up a set of scrubs prior to shadowing. Be sure to bring your Alberta Health Services ID to sign them out.
GNH: Scrubs are located in the ED by the locker rooms.
RAH: Scrubs and lab coats are available on a self-service basis and obtained from the Linen Room in S215-2 ATC.
STCH: Scrubs are located by the staff washroom and lounge inside the ED. They are not to be worn home.
UAH: Scrubs can be signed out from Linen Services, located in the basement of the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Center.
Arriving 10 minutes before your scheduled shift is a good idea, especially if you are unfamiliar with the layout of the Emergency Department. Usually, at the start of the shift, the physician you are shadowing will be found in the physician's office. They will be notified the week before your shift to expect a shadow student as well.
Please review the donning and doffing procedures for working in the Emergency Department during COVID.
Don't be surprised if the physician you were supposed to be shadowing with recommends that you shadow one of the residents. This is sometimes done to maximize your exposure to patients throughout the shift.
Your shift starts the night of the day listed. Think of it as starting at 2359 (11:50 pm) on the date listed.
