LAW538
Alberta Law Review
Published continuously since 1955, the Alberta Law Review (ALR) is a peer-reviewed legal journal that aims to promote legal research and scholarship, and to provide a forum for the discussion of contemporary legal issues of interest to lawyers, scholars, judges, and law students in Alberta and beyond. Operating out of the John A. Weir Memorial Library at the University of Alberta, the ALR is run by law students at both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.
Students at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law have the opportunity to apply to join the Alberta Law Review in their second year of law school. Successful applicants will complete volunteer hours and edits over their two years with the ALR. If the requirements for enrollment in the course are fulfilled, students may enrol in this course in third year, typically in their final term before graduation.
Being on the Editorial Board of the ALR is highly recognized by the legal community at large, and it is considered by some to be the most prestigious opportunity available to law students. Members of the Editorial Board of the ALR traditionally have an impressive record of obtaining clerkships, and all members receive an official invitation from the Alberta Courts to apply to its coveted articling program.

Application Information
The ALR Editorial Board is composed of second- and third-year students from the Faculty of Law. These students are selected by the Executive Committee of the ALR, in consultation with the Faculty Advisory Committee, and are charged with the operation and editing of the journal. Each student is expected to make a two-year commitment to the ALR, which entails filling a position on the Editorial Board by serving on a committee, and completing at least one edit per year. At the end of two years, three credits may be awarded to students who have completed the necessary requirements and have registered for LAW 538.
While academic achievement is an important consideration in selecting successful applicants, past editorial experience, a genuine interest in the ALR, and such things as business experience and website maintenance experience also make for a strong application. The ALR is also committed to becoming an organization that represents the diversity of both the Faculty of Law and Albertan society more generally. As such, we welcome and encourage applications from members of equity-seeking groups. Accommodations are available to applicants with disabilities upon request.
All incoming second-year students will be notified when applications open during the summer after their first year. Applicants must submit: (1) cover letter; (2) resume; (3) unofficial 1L transcripts; and (4) a completed test edit. The test edit and instructions will be provided. Applications typically open in June and are due in early August. Successful applicants are notified in early September.
