Welcome to ECE 330 Lab - Introduction to Power Engineering. There are three labs in ECE330, briefly, the goals of each lab are as follows:
Familiarization and Safety
In this lab you will become familiar with the Lab-Volt apparatus used in ECE 330 Labs, and learn the safety precautions and emergency procedures. You will learn how to use the power supply module, load banks and measurement module. By the end of this lab, you'll be able to make connections for different circuits using lab volt equipment, apply power to the circuit, take measurements , and use digital oscilloscope and phase analyzer. You will also be able to refresh your understanding of various power system parameters and how they change with different kind of loads.
Transformers
In this lab you will experiment on one of they key components of a Power System i.e. Transformer. You perform various tests on a transformer and calculate the transformer parameters and losses using your test results. You will also practice connecting three single phase transformers to make a 3-phase transformer.
Transmission Lines
In this lab you will use a Lab-Volt transmission line module that mimics a real transmission line. You will learn about the changes in voltage drops across the length of a transmission line (voltage regulation) and how to compensate for those voltage drops. You will also analyze and understand the effect of length on the parameters of a transmission line.
All 3 of the labs for ECE 330 operate in a similar manner. You are required to read the relevant manual before the labs and fill out the pre-lab questionnaire. The answers to the Pre-lab questions can be obtained from the course webpage, datasheets and the lab manuals themselves. At the start of each lab, the instructor will review the relevant theory and safety issues. In each lab, you are required to take measurements from the equipment and record the results. After the lab you will be required to do some sort of Post-lab activity which would usually contain analyzing the Results you obtained in the lab.
Labs are COMPULSORY
All labs have a Pre-lab that are due at the beginning of your scheduled laboratory session. The Pre-lab must be completed before you are allowed to participate in the laboratory experiments.
Labs are worth 20% of your final course grade. Therefore, with each of the 5 labs being worth the same amount, each lab is 4% of your course mark.
Lab Reports are due 1 week after you attend your lab section before 11:59pm. All reports need to be submitted to the appropriate link as a single pdf on eClass.
