Unlike "mentors", Academic Advisors have the ability to view all of the resident's assessment information to allow them to provide the kind of coaching you might expect from a program director in a smaller program.
Academic Advisors meet with assigned residents at regular intervals to conduct comprehensive reviews of performance information. This is accomplished by review of academic assessments such as EPAs, ITERs, OSCEs, 360 Evals, Logbooks, etc. and, of course, through direct one-on-one conversations with the resident. They are relied upon to follow a resident’s progress throughout the duration of their training and to guide or coach them over time.
Academic Advisors may also review, discuss, and facilitate implementation of individualized learning plans. They are also there as a resource for academic, personal, and professional growth. Finally, in some cases, the Academic Advisor may prepare recommendations for the Competence Committee regarding development and readiness to progress to a particular/next stage of training.
