The goal of this project is to understand Mandarin-speaking English learners' production of English speech sounds.
We are looking for international students who (1) are native Mandarin speakers from Northern China, (2) learned English as a second language; and (3) have recently moved to Canada for no more than five years. You will be invited to visit our lab, read a list of short words and sentences in English, and complete a questionnaire on your language and cultural experiences and language learning motivations. You will have the opportunity to receive a teaching session on pronouncing challenging English speech sounds.
We are also looking for undergraduate and graduate students who are native English speakers (those who have been residing in English-speaking areas in Canada and speaking English at home and at work/school most of the time). You will be invited to visit our lab, read a list of short words and sentences in English, and complete a questionnaire on your language and cultural experiences and language learning motivations.
A small gift card will be provided to thank you for your participation. If you participate through a subject pool, course credits will be assigned according to the subject pool's protocol.
Please contact us at birby@ualberta.ca if you are interested in participating in the study or have any questions.
