Telling Stories of Illness ... A reading from "ALL SKY, MIRROR OCEAN: A Healing Manifesto"
Brad Necyk, PhD, MFA
Join us for a presentation by Dr. Brad Necyk who will read excerpts of poetic prose from his upcoming book ALL SKY, MIRROR OCEAN: A Healing Manifesto. It is an account of his experience of bipolar disorder that weaves and knots with the experiences of psychiatric patients at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health during his doctoral research.
Brad Necyk is a visual artist and writer whose practice focuses on mental illness, empathy, consciousness, and flourishing. He recently completed a research-creation PhD.in Psychiatry at the University of Alberta and his doctoral research was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal. Brad’s first book of poetry on mental illness, art, and healing titled ALL SKY, MIRROR OCEAN: A Healing Manifesto recently passed peer-review and will be published in early-2023. Brad is a Postdoctoral Fellow at York University with VISTA (Vision: Science to Applications) and Cinema & Media Arts, creating works on addiction, organ transplantation, and medical assistance in dying. He will be collaborating to create XR (extended reality: augmented and virtual reality) stories and films. Brad is a Research Associate in Film & Digital Media at the University of California Santa Cruz where he is creating experimental films about the Earth’s futures.
