NCTTA Singles Divisional Qualifier Tournament (Spring)

January 31st, 2020

The second singles qualifier tournament was to sponsor a second individual for the NCTTA Divisional Singles competition on February 8th, 2020. Twelve club members competed, and only one earned the qualification:

Nazar Pyvovar bulldozed his way to the grand final of the tournament without losing a single game. He faced an ambitious newcomer to the club, Lake Ainsworth, who defeated club founder Ola Oduntan in the loser's bracket final. And although Lake could make Nazar lose his first game of the tournament, he could not take the match. Nazar earned his spot in the NCTTA Singles competition through five straight dominant victories.

NCTTA Singles Divisional Qualifier Tournament (Fall)

October 15th-21st, 2019

The UAH Table Tennis Club offered to sponsor three competitors in the NCTTA Divisional Singles competition, regardless of their membership level within the club. The first sponsored individual would be the winner of this tournament. Even if the winner of the tournament was not on the competitive team, the club would pay for the winner's registration, transportation, and lodging for the NCTTA competition.

Fifteen club members competed in this double elimination tournament, with each given a seed based on their place in the ranked leaderboard. The first three rounds were best of three, the semifinals were best of five, and the finals were best of seven. Each player competed extremely well, and the desire to represent UAH in the NCTTA singles competition was evident throughout the tournament!

The bracket results below only show a fraction of the drama that unfolded from there.

Supreme Champion

JJ Kaler owned the top of the leaderboard for most of the fall 2019 semester. This earned him the first seed and a bye through the first round of the tournament. His excellent attacking got him through rounds two and three before he faced another strong attacker, second seed Ola Oduntan. Ola won 3-1, sending JJ to the losers' bracket final against Nazar Pyvovar, who had just fought his way through four rounds of the losers' bracket.

JJ won the best of seven losers' bracket final 4-0, bringing him to a rematch against Ola for the grand final. JJ won the first set 4-0, causing a bracket reset. He then won the first three games of the next set, bringing him only one game away from the title. However, Ola fought for his tournament survival by winning the next three games, ending JJ's eleven game win streak for the day and bringing the grand finals to a deciding game.

The drama continued from there. The deciding game could not be played due to time constraints, so the set was called a 3-3 draw and rescheduled for Tuesday, October 21st. And, when the deciding set finally commenced, JJ redeemed his attempt at the perfect finish by winning the final set 4-0.

Fall 2019 Ranked Placement Tournament

November 5th, 2019

The start of the UAH Table Tennis Club Ranked Leaderboard was marked by a round robin placement tournament. The results of the tournament were used to assign each player a "placement" rating on the ranked leaderboard. Seventeen players competed, in three groups, with the winner of the second group awarded the closest rank to the first group, and the winner of the third group awarded the closest rank to the second group.

The first group consisted of JJ Kaler, Taylor Kerlin, Ola Oduntan, Nazar Pyvovar, Momo Chen, and Ali Khan. The second group consisted of Mason Shepherd, Jackson Miles, Carter Moore, Mitchell Dodson, and Baleigh Brackin. And, the third group consisted of Keelan Lynch, twins Nathan and Noah, Kyle Fletcher, Arnav Maroju, and Michael Kanoa.

Each member of each group played every other member in their group, and the players were ordered in the club leaderboard based on those results. Kyle, Arnav, and Michael were the top three in group three, earning them the 12th, 13th, and 14th spots on the club leaderboard and placement ratings of 1120, 1100, and 1080. Mitchell, Carter, and Jackson finished in the top three of the second group, earning them the 7th, 8th, and 9th spots on the club leaderboard and placement ratings of 1220, 1200, and 1180, respectively. Momo, Taylor, and Ola finished top three in the first group, giving them the top three spots on the leaderboard and placement ratings of 1340, 1320, and 1300, respectively.

The start of the ranked leaderboard generated a lot of excitement within the club, and more competitors quickly joined with base placement ratings of 1000.
