TARTARUS

Liquid Bipropellant Engine Development

What is Tartarus?

Tartarus is the Space Hardware Club at UAH's bipropellant liquid rocket engine project. Our goal is to design, manufacture, and test liquid rocket engines and create an outlet for students to participate in liquid rocketry in their undergrad. We've been working since 2017, and you can keep up with our progress here. This team was formerly known as the Spaceport America Cup (SAC) team and the Bipropellant Engine Development team.

Mission

The goal of the Tartarus Project is to provide undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on the design, development, and testing of liquid propulsion systems, and to participate in research opportunities related to propulsion systems.

What's in the Name?

In mythology, Tartarus is the deepest level of the underworld, and we chose it for our name to signify the challenge we were undertaking by attempting liquid rocketry as an undergrad team. This is where we derive our team motto, Ad Astra From the Abyss. The name is also an homage to our previous faculty advisor, Dr. Tantaris, who was crucial to the beginning of the project while it was still known as SAC.
