The Experimental Mechanics and Multiphysics Modeling (E3M) Laboratory is part of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The lab, founded in 2022, is directed by Professor Nathan Spulak and conducts research on the mechanical response of materials, with a special emphasis on materials subjected to high strain rates and dynamic impact loading. The lab uses a combination of experimental testing and multiphysics modeling to investigate the coupled mechanical and thermal response of metals, polymers, composites, energy storage devices such as batteries, and energetic materials. This knowledge is then utilized to enhance automotive vehicle and aircraft safety, and design the next generation of materials, structures, vehicles, and spacecraft.
