Teaching is my passion. My philosophy adheres to the basic principles of Science; Perspiration and Inspiration but also attempts to follow the Socratic method, where nothing is taken for granted but, it is the interaction with the student, critical thinking and intuitive understanding of “things that make sense” that entail my foci. Although I follow the textbook’s material, my lectures are often more inclusive and definitely less regurgitating than the mainstream textbooks. My goal is that you build an "under the hood" understanding of Physics. In my lectures, I engage in interactive discussions. I do not encourage (in fact, I despise it) formulae memorization and the old-school "plug and chug" type of "teaching". Conversely, I will teach you how to critically think and use algebra. We are going to solve lots and lots of problems, individually and in groups. Last but not least; I am not here to grade you; I am here to teach you Physics. All in all, you eventually grade yourself.
For all the students majoring in UAH's Science and Engineering, My advice is If you want to be successful in your field do not treat any of the PH 111/112/113 courses as "just another course" but rather as material that embodies
1) Your ABC's
2) Your cornerstone
3) Your foundation
In Science there is Physics. Everything else is stamp collecting (Ernest Rutherford)
Textbook: Wiley's Resnick 11th edition; Has been in the market for quite a while. Similar teaching concepts like most textbooks. Worth the money mainly because of the online material (i.e. WileyPlus)
Exams: You will have 4 exams; The fourth will be the final (cumulative). I will provide (ample) sample exams so you know what to expect
Graded Homework: WileyPlus access. As I said before - expensive but it's worth it
Ungraded Homework: Problems from my personal collection. Some have video solutions. You will find these throughout this website. The point here is to push the envelop. In the Honor's section some of these problems may magically show up on a test. View a few sample problems here
Bonus Points: If you are present in class and participate with your TurningPoint clicker thingy you will not regret it. Mark my word. Not only will you learn more but your grade will also go up! You need to buy the TurningPoint from the bookstore with an activation license. If you have one from past semesters you do NOT need to buy a new one just REGISTER it for my course
Grading Scheme: Homework 10 %, Exams (1-3) 20% Exam (final) 30%
Calculate your grade: See here (TBA)
Lectures: All my lectures are recorded Khan-Academy style. And of course these are made available the same day online (Google Drive) in common video format. The lectures will be found on this website
Office hours: MW 9-11 (AM) OPB 239 or by appointment at tc0025 at uah.edu
Online office hours: For special circumstances I hold an online session. You need to install Zoom (free) on your laptop or tablet.
Complains: See ME first, if we cannot resolve it then do what you need to do.
Academic Honesty: quid pro quo; If you play nice, I will play nicer. I will NOT tolerate cheating. This spells a direct F.
