Sunflower Child

By Allisa Hutchinson

Welcome!

These paintings are based on an original comic I’m currently writing called Sunflower Child. They demonstrate concepts and ideas that have popped up in my head throughout the years including themes of innocence, sacrifice, empathy, and growth that I wish to demonstrate through the main protagonist named Mira, a.k.a. the Sunflower Child, as well as through others that I have created over the years.

Using acrylic paint on canvas, I have been working on these paintings for over a year now. Throughout the years I’ve been more and more dissatisfied with the representation of minorities and marginalized groups within the media. In my writing I want these groups to be represented without them being a token side character or a punchline that people can easily forget about. I want my characters to be embraced for who they are and not for what groups they represent or the differences that set them apart from the majority. In other words, I wanted my character's existence and attributes not to be questioned and simply accepted because the people that my characters may represent exist in this world we live in. This series of paintings shows the journey of my writings by focusing on the main character from my first comic in the making.
