With TeachASL, we want to develop and improve three important relationships in our daily life: hearing students and deaf students, hearing teachers, and parents and deaf children. TeachASL is an assistive learning tool where learners can learn ASL on the fly and immersively.
TeachASL can help improve the relationship between the parent and deaf children relationship at home. Communication with parents plays a big role in improving deaf children’s mental growth and other soft skills. Lack of communication can lead deaf children to language deprivation. Eventually, it may lead to a life-long impact on language skills, cognitive and socio-emotional development. That is why language immersion is important to deaf children. But this can be challenging for hearing parents as they are facing difficulties learning sign language. Lack of parental willingness, busy schedule, the wrong conception of sign language make this learning process more difficult.
TeachASL can contribute to inclusive education in the classroom setting by assisting hearing teachers and students to learn ASL. Sign language translators may assist deaf students with understanding the class content as it is taught by a hearing teacher. However, such resources of ASL translators are limited and it would be great if teachers themselves can deliver class content in sign language. There are potential conflicts between hearing students and deaf students as well: Sometimes hearing students can not find a proper way to communicate with deaf students and this can cause frustration and tension between the two groups of students.
