Art House is an online platform that connects artists and collectors. Through our platform users can explore, buy, and add artworks to their collection that represents a variety of art mediums - all from the comfort of their own home on a computer or mobile device. Those with a compatible mobile device will be able to use augmented reality technology to see how a painting or print will look within the context of their own home, business, office, etc.

Independent artists in smaller cities like Rochester do not have a dedicated online platform to promote and sell their artwork to local and global art collectors. They are most often discovered by just friends and family. There is high supply of art because independent and budding professional artists are constantly creating artworks, but they cannot sell those pieces without finding the right buyers.

We believe that online competitors such as Deviantart or Etsy are unable to connect buyers and artists to people in their local area. We want to take the focus from the screen to the people in the city, to focus on the real human connections that the application can bring. Galleries and exhibition spaces are also troubling - how artists often need to pay a fee or royalty to exhibit and sell their artworks - but through our application, we aim to give back to the artist as much of the earning as possible. And for the community of collectors and art-lovers, Art House hopes to be the destination to discover, learn about and collect artworks and thereby appreciate local art scene.

Our main intent with this app was to use ARCore in order to give users an idea of what the painting would look like in their own homes. Eventually, we would like this app to go on to the Google Play Store after more refinements.

Evaluation (needfinding results)

Arthouse split up its needfinding tasks into two parts - interviews and surveying.
We had three separate surveys - one for students on campus, one for art collectors and another for art businesses in the Rochester area. What we found with the student-based survey is that not many people responded, due to how the survey was worded. Because of the way that the survey aimed to reach out to people who were involved with buying local art, we did not find many people interested in participating in the survey. This may be indicative of lack of interest in the application which was something that we took note of. Our surveys with art collectors and art businesses proved to be the same with lack of responses - this time due to scheduling and transportation. Because we did not have a reliable result from the survey although we did have a good format and straightforward questions.

What we ended up doing was putting our focus towards needfinding in interviews, testing the prototype and getting feedback on how our mobile application ran before we completed the final iteration. We conducted multiple interviews with student artists, one of our target demographics. From the interviews, we learned about the demand for an easy and simple way to display art. This included a animistic design which prototype users emphasized. The Arthouse prototype succeeds in fulfilling the needs of the users that were put forward during needfinding with it's simple interface and easy to use functionality.
