"The General Practice Residency (GPR) program is designed for advanced clinical and didactic training in general dentistry with intensive hospital experience at the postdoctoral level. GPR programs provide instruction and experience in the delivery of care to a wide range of ambulatory and hospitalized patients" (ADA).
What is the length of a GPR?
12 months with some having the option of doing a second "Chief" year
How to decide which programs to apply to?
The best ways to learn about programs are through word of mouth. You can do research through the website portal (http://programpages.passweb.org/search) and go to each program's website individually. Many applicants used a combination of that plus asking people who were at the program or had gone through it. Many applicants' research consisted of looking at the past 4-5 years of graduation and seeing where people had gone in the past then doing more research on programs that sounded intriguing.
Why should you do a GPR?
Experience working with medically complex patients
Further formal training in all aspects of general dentistry
Exposure to hospital dentistry
Interprofessional collaboration
Great addition to your resume and credentials
Why should you not do a GPR?
Lower compensation than going straight into practice
On-call shifts
Hours worked per week are typically longer
Match process limits where you train and live for that year
