From the framing of shots to the selection of music. Covering the world of filmmaking from the lens of women filmmakers allowed me to appreciate women's artistic involvement in film. Additionally, analyzing the difference it makes to view these documentaries from different parts of the world and being open to understanding the different styles and artistic choices being used was something I took from this course. Film and Memory
Taking this course at GUQ focused on analyzing film giving me the chance to implement the skills I have gained from NUQ to make accurate debates surrounding memory studies by examining how memory is approached and represented in global cinema. The perspective on how film has become the primary medium for conveying societal stories about the past, present, and future has strongly resonated with the profound impact of film on collective memory. One of the topics that we got to cover in the course addressed social trauma specifically the representability of genocide, guilt and collective responsibility, and the return of the repressed. Over the semester, as we course, we watched and analyzed film every week and shared our reflections with the professor while also discussing amongst each other what we thought of the film and how the message was expressed in a cinematic scene with the viewers. The course also showcased a curated selection of globally recognized films that have left an indelible mark in the field of memory studies. These films serve as poignant examples of how cinema engages with and contributes to the discourse on memory, making them influential in shaping our collective understanding of the past.
