We acknowledge that the Northwestern campus sits on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa as well as the Menominee, Miami and Ho-Chunk nations.
The main purpose of GMU is to give undergraduate students from all fields an additional outlet to seek help and advice within the university in an informal setting. We think that the proximity in age will make graduate student mentors more approachable and relatable to mentees. For graduate students, this program will give them an opportunity to develop professionally and build their mentorship skills.
As an organization, we will support our mentorship pairs through monthly emails centered on an important professional theme to help facilitate discussions on topics that students often struggle with (e.g., first impressions, dealing with failure, managing finances as a student, etc.).
We also hope students take advantage of our "Coffee Chat" program. We recognize that not one mentor can be all things to a mentee. We want to encourage networking skills through mentees either taking the initiative or working with their mentor to identify additional mentors to answer specific questions. Unlike the official mentorship pair, Coffee Chat mentors can meet once and schedule follow up meetings if desired. In a way, it is practice for informational interviews!
