In October 2022 I started an internship as a project engineer at ESI Construction. ESI is a general contractor based out of Meridian, Idaho. I interned in the Grocery Division, where we do both ground-up construction projects and facility improvement projects. I examined architectural drawings and project documents for companies such as WinCo, Fred Meyer, and Whole Foods, and determine what subcontractors would be needed for the project. Then we offer up the different assignments to be bid on by the subcontractors, and I assist with bid calls, in which I call the subcontractors and ask if they will be bidding on our work. Once we've gotten a subcontractor to bid on every piece of work in the project, we can provide our final bid offer back to the grocery store owner.
The main skills I developed and improved are related to analyzing the architectural drawings and project documents. These are similar to CAD drawings I created and explored in my engineering courses at Boise State. I have created civil engineering drawings in AutoCAD and part/assembly drawings in Solidworks. The construction plans I examined required superb attention to detail and an understanding of many aspects of construction that I am learning.
I also practiced my communication skills in a professional environment when interacting with project managers and superintendents, as well as external subcontractors.
