This course is designed to introduce English 9 students to the essential elements of short stories and thinking about what makes a great story. Students will write an original short story and publish it to a wider audience by applying their work to a national writing publication contest.

Hi! My name is Mrs. Smith and I am an English 9 teacher at Escondido High School. I love sharing my passion for reading and writing by helping students find their voice and their story. I truly believe that everyone has a story to tell. In this course I will help you tap into your creativity to bring out your unique story to share with the world.
Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.
