Background
The project I helped work on includes developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities for aid station volunteers and sweeper volunteers at any race offered by the Iowa Gravel Series (IGS). Led by Dr. Lisa Giacumo, my team collaborated closely with our Subject Matter Expert (SME) Michelle Cleasby and Chris McQueen. Michelle Cleasby is on the Iowa Gravel Series board of directors as the Community Director meanwhile Chris holds the role of Series Director. The training aims at providing Aid Station volunteer with the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to help set up a race aid station, attend the aid station during the race, and take down the aid station after a race. The training also aims to provide Aid Station volunteers and Sweeper volunteers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to identify and attend to any medical situations that may arise for riders on race day.
Analyses of Learners and Environment, Tasks, and Learning Requirements
The project focuses on providing aid station volunteers and sweeper volunteers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability to perform their respective role at Iowa Gravel Series races. Through analysis with members on the Iowa Gravel Series Board of Directors, we identified the learners as diverse individuals (both in ethnicity, age, and background) who may have prior experience with aid stations and medical situations as riders. Tasks include providing a welcoming environment for riders through setting up, attending, and taking down an aid station as well as identifying and attending to medical situations. The learning requirements for learners consists of structured in-person instructor-led training to ensure. For those unable to attend, there will be a self-paced eLearning module to ensure comprehension and consistency across all learners. Lesson Plan
The lesson plan aims at providing the Aid Station volunteers with necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to set up, attend to, and take down an aid station as well as provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to aid station volunteers and sweepers to identify and attend to medical situations. The lesson incorporates varied instructional methods - including but not limited to - the five components of the LeaPS instructional model, the "Set Me Up - Show Me - Let Me - Watch Me" model, and the Keller's ARCS model. The lesson plan establishes the Iowa Gravel Series establishes instructional and learner activities. The lesson plan emphasizes the Introduction to the Iowa Gravel Series, Setting Up The Aid Station, Attending The Aid Station, Taking Down the Aid Station, Responding to Medical Problems, and provides additional resources and takeaways.
