Atmospheric perspective

Atmospheric perspective- refers to the effect the atmosphere has on the appearance of objects when you look at them from a distance.

Target

I can represent the illusion of space using atmospheric perspective.

Most often seen in landscapes.

Notice how colors change to show the illusion of things getting further away.

Most often it is seen in paintings

When you are drawing using atmospheric perspective, artists often lighten the values to make the space appear to be further away

Let's practice this technique when drawing mountains:

Draw three contour mountains.

Each mountain should overlap the next.

Once you have the outline of your three mountains, add values that go from light to dark as you get further away from you.

Add obvious details that get slightly less obvious as they get further away.
