K-3 Math Fact Fluency Games

Knowing math facts is helpful as students work with larger numbers and more complex math. Students are more apt to learn quick, flexible, and efficient strategies for finding a fact if they develop a deep understanding of numbers and their relationships. This “number sense” comes from working with and exploring numbers. We hope this information helps you engage meaningfully with your child’s growing understanding of numbers and fact development. Helpful Tips

Playing math games together should be fun. We learn best when we are not worried about making mistakes or feeling too pressured by time. Here are a few helpful tips and questions to keep in mind as you explore facts and play games with your child.

    1. Provide time for your child to think about the problems. If after some time, your child needs some help, you might ask...
      • How can we figure this out together?
      • Where can we start?
      • What can we draw or what tool can we use to help us? (e.g., counters, fingers, tally marks, number line, etc.)
    2. Help your child correct a mistake by using questions rather than giving the answer. Such questions help develop reasoning and encourage problem solving.
      • How did you get that answer?
      • Is there another way you can figure that out?
      • Do you want to try again?
