According to the Idaho State Department of Education:
"Home Schooling is education directed by the parent/guardian. Since Idaho does not regulate or monitor home school education, it is up to the parent/guardian to select the curriculum they wish to use. There is no registration or sign up procedure required and the state of Idaho does not have a set curriculum to be followed for home school education."
If you're interested in traditional homeschooling, be aware that Idaho does NOT regulate or monitor home education. This means that as the parent, you are free to choose what, when, and how your child learns.
You do NOT need to keep a log of hours to report to the state. There is no minimum required hours of instruction in Idaho.
You do NOT have to teach any specific curriculum or cover the same topics as public school.
You are NOT required to keep a portfolio of student work to show to the state.
Of course, its never a bad idea to keep a portfolio of student work for your records, but the state does not require this.
How to withdraw your child from public school:
If your child is currently enrolled in public school, notify the school office that you will be withdrawing your student. This can be done in person, but in writing is usually best.
You are NOT required to give the school any additional information regarding your future educational plans.
You do NOT need to report anything or register your child with the state as a homeschooler.
If your child has never attended public school, you do not need to do anything with the local school district. You can simply begin teaching them at home by the time your child is 7 years old (the compulsory age of education in Idaho).
HSLDA, the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, is an excellent resource that provides information on homeschool laws, regulations, and requirements for each state. HSLDA can also offer legal aid to members who are facing issues related to homeschooling. Click Here to visit hslda.org.
