Initial problem statement
“Harper is a child who would benefit from a Go Baby Go car modified to suit her unique needs. Go Baby Go is a project which started in 2012 at the University of Delaware which integrates assistive technology, families, clinicians and engineering students to provide children with disabilities the opportunity for movement, mobility and socialization. Go Baby Go cars are modified to have the “gas pedal” controlled by a switch in an alternate location, as well as with additional support structures, generally made out of PVC, that help position the child in the car.
Harper has a Go Baby Go car (see attached photos in appendix) that has been previously modified. However, she is not able to use her car currently because of how it is set up. Harper is not able to make purposeful movements with her hands and arms, so she is not able to press the “gas pedal” button where it is currently located on the steering wheel. Harper’s car needs to be modified with a switch that can be operated using the movement of her head to make the car go and stop. This will help her learn about cause-and-effect relationships between her actions and the movement of the car. Harper also needs support for her head and neck in the car, possibly by supporting her to sit in a somewhat reclined position.
Students working on this project will work with Harper’s dad, Rick Wade, and may also consult with Shanna Herman, a physical therapist at St. Luke’s Children’s Rehab who works with Harper.” (Delaney, Ann).
Detailed Problem Statement
The cart overall should be a fun experience for Harper but the main goal is for her to be able to learn cause and effect. The control button needs to be where Harper can hit it with her head because she makes decisions by moving her head and cannot make purposeful movements with her hands. There are no safety precautions in place with the car so something must be added to create a safe way for Harper to sit and be supported; her neck and head need support. The car needs to be able to be shut off by an adult who is watching Harper. The kill switch is in a difficult spot to reach so it must be moved to an easily accessible spot for whoever is watching Harper. The car also has multiple screws exposed which are sharp and need filed down or removed. Additionally, Harper has a constant food source stored in a backpack that needs a place to be stored on the cart.
