Each Career and Technical Education (CTE) course has a Proof of Learning (POL) required by the state. There are four different types of POLs; State Assessment, Performance Based Measurement (PBM), Credential or Indicator POL (IPOL). A State Assessment POL consists of 100 multiple choice questions at the end of the course; a PBM is a portfolio collection of various performance based measurements that students complete throughout the course, a Credential is one or more industry recognized certifications that students must earn during the course, and an IPOL is a alternate local created assessment. Each POL is mandatory and counts as a student's final exam grade for the course. Students can not be exempt from a POL and the results count in the school and districts overall yearly accountability.
There are benefits for students who have attained a credential. They have a documented skill set, are more marketable in the employment arena, and are better prepared to succeed in a post-secondary environment. Credentialing offers students authentic evidence of skill attainment that is relevant to careers and continuing education.
CTE programs are major contributors to Tyrrell County's supply of skilled workers for local businesses. Business and industry normally consider external credentialing a reliable "predictor of success" for entry-level employment. Labor pools with specific technical skills along with foundational and transferrable skills attract businesses to locate and operate in our region. It is the goal of Tyrrell County CTE to increase the number of students who earn an Industry Recognized Credential each year through innovative CTE programs and pathways.
