Why Should I Use My Texas Woman's Email?

Follow these instructions to set up your TWU GMail: https://servicecenter.twu.edu/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=7473

Your first log on to GMail must be at a PC/laptop/Mac ... afterward, GMail may be accessed on any device with an internet connection and via the GMail mobile app.

Like most universities, TWU assigns students an official email account, and uses that account to communicate important information to you. Check your TWU email account frequently to ensure that you do not miss important information.

Here are some important reminders about why you should use your TWU email account:

WE USE EMAIL TO TRANSMIT IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Most universities send students information solely through email, as is the case at TWU. We may post some information on our website, but no longer send information to students via snail mail for the bulk of our day-to-day communication. When we send information via email, we send only to official TWU email addresses.

STUDENTS ARE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR INFORMATION SENT VIA EMAIL

If we send information via email - notices, deadlines, names of advisor, etc. - we expect students to have the information and be responsible for it. Students who do not check their official email may miss key information and/or deadlines.

COLLEGE OFFICES AND FACULTY MEMBERS RECOGNIZE COLLEGE EMAIL AS LEGITIMATE

If you use your college email to contact a faculty or staff member, that person will recognize the official email address. Because of concerns about computer viruses, many faculty and staff members will not open emails whose addresses they don't recognize. Something which comes from cutiepie@yahoo may go directly into the trash. Emails with odd addresses may not even make it past a TWU firewall.

CHECKING A COLLEGE EMAIL ACCOUNT IS GOOD PRACTICE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD

In many professions, employees have official business email accounts separate from their personal accounts. They are expected to check it frequently (sometimes constantly) and to use that email for business purposes. Colleges are following that lead. Checking and using your official email will instill important habits for your professional life.

STUDENTS CAN REPLY EASILY AND DOCUMENT CONVERSATIONS

If you receive an email from a faculty member, it is easy to hit reply and to respond. Both you and the faculty member can respond at a convenient time. There will also be a documentation of the conversation later. This can be crucial if you need to reconfirm the time of an appointment, or remember what the professor said about an assignment, or remind the professor that she agreed to something. A phone conversation may rely solely on memory.
