Safer sex refers to behaviors and practices that reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy. Practicing safe sex also involves communication, respect, and consent between partners.

Consent

What is consent?

Consent is a mutual agreement to engage in sexual activity.

Consent is mandatory - not an option.

Consent must be communicated and ongoing. Consent can be withdrawn at any time.

A person giving consent must be of legal age, sober and alert, and not under coercion.

A partner should feel safe and comfortable to say yes or no.

How to ask for consent?

Ask, "Do you want to..."
Ask, "Is this okay?"
Listen to your partner's verbal and nonverbal language.
Be respectful if your partner denies consent, even when not verbally stated.

Use Protection

Using protection is one of the most effective ways to prevent STIs and pregnancy.

Many STIs do not show symptoms, which means someone may have an infection without realizing it. Regular testing helps detect infections early and protects both your health and your partner's.

All students have access to the Denton campus clinic, with services available both in person and via telehealth. Students enrolled at the Dallas and Houston campuses may also utilize the clinic and are welcome to schedule in-person visits as needed.

Telehealth appointments are available for select services, including contraceptive care, as well as sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing orders and referrals.

Student Health Services (SHS) provides free condoms to students at all campus locations through grant-funded initiatives.
