This event explored the many ways that food nourishes us.
Food not only sustains us physically when we eat, but it also creates bonds of community—when we "break bread" with others. The food we eat tells stories about who we are, holding our histories and relationships, and becoming part of our lives as we tell stories about memorable meals.
Bread and Altars invited participants to engage in hands-on, interactive sessions that focused on different facets of our experiences with food—specifically by reflecting on the role bread plays in our lives.
Bread and Altars includes 3 activities:
3:00-4:30 -- Bread-making workshop
Our festival day started with a bread-baking workshop. During the workshop, each participant made the bread that became part of the dinner menu at the end of the event.
4:30-6:00 -- Altar-crafting workshop
The second portion of the evening featured a communal altar making practice inspired by Mesoamerican indigenous and Chicanx traditions. Erecting a community altar is an activity where community members can display foods, food recipes, or representations of foods.
6:00-7:30 -- Community dinner
Our evening ended with a shared meal designed to bring everyone together around a table without hierarchy to reinforce the value of each person present. Guests enjoyed delicious food prepared by the Andersons chefs and the bread from the bread-making workshop.
