Explore the many that food nourishes us!
Food not only sustains us physically when we eat, but it also creates bonds of community—when we "break bread" with others. The food we eat tells stories about who we are, holding our histories and relationships, and becoming part of our lives as we tell stories about memorable meals.
Bread and Altars invites participants to engage in hands-on, interactive sessions that focus on different facets of our experiences with food--specifically by reflecting on the role bread plays in our lives.
Bread and Altars includes 3 activities:
3:00-4:30 -- Bread-making workshop
Our festival day will start with a bread-baking workshop. During the workshop, each participant will make the bread that will become part of the dinner menu at the end of the festival.
4:30-6:00 -- Altar-crafting workshop
The second portion of the evening will feature a communal altar making practice inspired by Mesoamerican indigenous and Chicanx traditions. Erecting a community altar will be an activity where community members can display foods, food recipes, or representations of foods.
6:00-7:30 -- Community dinner
Our evening will end with a shared meal designed to bring everyone together around a table without hierarchy to reinforce the value of each person present. Guests will eat the bread from the bread-making workshop.
Bread and Altars is a hands-on, family-friendly, interactive gathering that is free and open to the public. All are welcome!
Space is limited, so please register early.
